We choose the Island Marble Butterfly since this laid-back fellow was re-discovered in 1998 in San Juan Island National Historical Park after being listed as extinct for nearly 100 years. This extremely rare dragonfly exists in Door County, Wisconsin with very small populations in IL and MO. On the brink of extinction it is the only one listed on the Federal List of Endangered Species. Koalas aren’t related to bears but they are mammals with only a few thousand living in the wild. Logging, roads and loss of habitat has reduced their population by 90% in less than one decade! The Ivory-billed Woodpecker considered extinct for 50 years was rediscovered in 2004 in The Big Woods of Arkansas. It originally went extinct due to logging of mature virgin hardwood forests. Once plentiful in the US the Gray / Timber Wolf was hunted nearly to extinction. Today the Yellowstone wolves are a rare recovery success story playing a major role within our ecosystems. There were less then 20 of these majestic birds in the 50’s but today nearly 200 live in the ONLY wild migratory flock that flies 2700 miles from Buffalo National Park in Canada to a Nat. Wildlife Refuge in TX. Prized for its thick beautiful fur the Snow Leopard has an est. 3,500 to 7,000 living in altitudes of 9800 to 17000 ft. with 60% of its habitat in China. This cat lives in cold, high and dry rugged mountains. Belugas live in small groups known as pods. These white whales live in coastal waters of the Artic and grow to 13 to 20 ft. They are very intelligent and social animals that can mimic several sounds. Mountain Gorillas living in the wild are in one of four parks. They are powerful yet generally gentle and shy with less then 1000 living wild in groups that average 11 individuals. Their lifespan is 40-50 yrs. Spirit Bears are white bears born from Black Bears. Global warming has pushed Grizzly Bears into their habitat. Combined with trophy hunting of Black Bears the beautiful Spirit Bears are on the brink of extinction.
